After less than two scandalous weeks on the job, the Communications Director handpicked by besieged United States President Donald Trump has been abruptly removed from his post. Anthony Scaramucci, a billionaire Wall Street investment banker, raised eyebrows on Capitol Hill as a profane and outspoken man who loved the spotlight and boasted of his brash New York background, but he would prove to be too much for Trump’s new Chief of Staff to tolerate. News briefs of Scaramucci’s sudden departure were first reported by CNN on Monday afternoon as he was summarily escorted out of the White House. Scaramucci was hired by Trump largely after a news publication by CNN misquoted the investment banker; two editors and one journalist lost their jobs after that story, which Trump used as an example of fake news and proof that the American news media fabricates negative reporting against the Executive Branch.
The short and chaotic term served by Scaramucci started with the resignation of former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, who would not accept the investment banker as a boss. The next move by Scaramucci was to fire Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, but not until after he completely lambasted him with lots of profanity in an amazing interview with The New Yorker magazine. During the same interview, Scaramucci also blasted Trump’s strategist Stephen Bannon, who may be the next sensational firing in the troubled White House. What is interesting about Scaramucci’s dismissal is that he paved his own way out by firing Priebus since this prompted Trump to assign retired Marine Corps General John Kelly as the new Chief of Staff. Kelly’s first action was to get rid of Scaramucci, who seems to have some baggage that could further affect the White House.
Scaramucci counts Priebus and Bannon as former co-workers at the colossal investment banking firm Goldman Sachs, which has been tightly connected to the US government for many decades. Known in Wall Street as “The Mooch,” Scaramucci has been very successful in finance thanks to his flamboyant media appearances and his ability to make high-profile connections. Although he has been dismissive of Trump in the past, Scaramucci changed his mind, perhaps sensing a job opportunity, and went public with praise for his fellow New York billionaire after the election.
The White House may have dodged a bullet this week as the New York Post reported that Scaramucci’s wife filed for divorce just as she was preparing to give birth to the couple’s baby boy, who was born at the same time his father started his short-lived White House job. The reasons for the divorce filing have been confirmed to not have been related to the association with Trump; however, this did not stop an American fake news publisher to suggest that Scaramucci may have leaked nude photographs of his wife as revenge for the sudden divorce filing which was later debunked by fact-checking website Snopes.
