In advance of their new album dropping this summer, TLC has released their track “Way Back” featuring Snoop Dogg. The single has a fun groove and sounds like classic TLC. Both the lyrics and the music are delightfully nostalgic. Anyone who spent the 90s jamming to TLC will happily step back in time with the ladies and Snoop for this fun track. “Way Back” is in the same vein as TLC’s previous big hits like “No Scrubs” and “Waterfalls.” As TIME puts it, the old hits and this new track are “timeless songs that showcase their impressive pipes and innate danceable beats.” The song also honors a lot of legendary music icons like Prince, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, and Michael Jackson by dropping their names.
When Snoop drops in to rap a few stanzas including lines like “reminiscing ’bout the days of way back” and “the past is a blast,” it only adds to the nostalgic vibe. The collaboration between TLC and Snoop Dogg is a first, though TLC has collaborated with other rappers like Sean “Puffy” Combs and Missy Elliot in the past. Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas took to Kickstarter to finance this record where they assured fans that their final album would “stay true to the TLC sound.” The Kickstarter campaign was extremely successful, quickly raising over $400K, including donations from other artists like New Kids on the Block, Katy Perry, Bette Midler, and Justin Timberlake.
TLC formed in 1991. The third member of TLC, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, died in 2002 but T-Boz and Chilli say “Lisa’s spirit will always be present in our music. That will never change.” According to Billboard, TLC is the second most successful girl group of all time, trailing only behind The Supremes. They have sold 65 million records worldwide and their songs have ranked high on the charts numerous times, including four number-one singles. The official music video for “Way Back” will be released later this month. The video is directed by Chris Robinson and will reportedly feature some TLC fans. Their yet-unnamed fifth and final album will be released on June 30th.
