First, there was a rumor that Madonna’s recent trip to Malawi was to adopt a child. Then, Madonna categorically denied the rumors. Now, the truth has come out. Madonna has in fact adopted twins from Malawi. The 4-year-old girls are named Estere and Stelle. Madonna officially confirmed the news with an Instagram picture of her and the adorable twins. The post expressed gratitude and asked for privacy during this transitional time for her family.
Madonna needed to secure special approval from the High Court to get around certain rules. The previous Malawian president had Madonna stricken of her VIP status and spoke very harshly about the singer. Judge Fiona Mwale was convinced that the singer’s intentions were good and that she would be able to provide for the children. The judge did grill Madonna pretty intensely first, asking questions about her age, her health, her celebrity status, and some of her recent behavior at a DC rally. Madonna’s successful previous adoption of two Malawian children and her strong connection to the country through her charitable foundation, Raising Malawi, tipped the scales in her favor.
Mwale said that Madonna encountered the twins through her charity work at orphanages and that “she felt compelled to fill a gap in their lives and open up her home to them.” The girls’ mother died shortly after they were born via C-section. According to court documents, the twins have five older siblings and their father is unable to care for all of them. He was present in court.
Court-appointed guardian Dominic Misomali confirmed that Madonna and the twins had met two years previously while the singer was visiting the Home of Hope orphanage as part of her charitable work. According to Misomali, she filed the paperwork to begin the adoption process at that point. The girls can be seen in Madonna’s Instagram posts a few times in the past year.
Estere and Stelle will join the singer’s brood of Lourdes, 20, Rocco, 16, David Banda, 11, and Mercy James, 11. David and Mercy were both adopted from Malawi and are likely ready to help introduce the twins to their new American lives. Madonna made the commitment that the girls would not be disconnected from their homeland. David and Mercy have returned to visit their homeland and Estere and Stelle will likely return as well. The singer’s charitable work in the country will also continue.
