For a candidate that uses the word “liar” as much as Donald Trump, you would expect his record to be squeaky clean, but Trump is far from an angel when it comes to truth telling. He has even gone as far as to nickname a former opponent “Lyin’ Ted”. If that wasn’t enough to cause concern, Trump is known for his long winded rants where he’s been reported to use the word liar as much as humanly known possible for a single speech. So how does this “liar liar pants on fire” candidate measure up to his own standard of honesty?
Trumps Biggest Trip Ups
Probably one of the most emotionally charged lie uttered by front runner Donald Trump was when he claimed to have seen nonexistent television coverage of “thousands and thousands” of Muslims in New Jersey cheering the collapse of the World Trade Center towers on 9/11. Not only were New Yorkers offended, but the entire Muslim population was condemned by that single statement. New Jersey was appalled by the statement and many of the local residents fired back stating, “We were just as much hurt”. There have been absolutely no reports of thousands of people cheering the 911 attacks, in New Jersey or anywhere in the United States for that matter.
As the “birther in chief” Donald Trump has often lied that President Barack Obama was not born in the United States. Trump has further claimed that he sent investigators to Hawaii, (where the president was born), who were about to “discover something”. But as of date, there have been no indications of what was found, or even if Lyin’ Trump did indeed send any investigators to Hawaii. This narrative as one of the habitual lies of Trump was part of the incendiary attempts by the Republican party to delegitimize a legitimately elected President of the United States, attempts which, as we know, have failed spectacularly.
Ford Motor Company
Ford company responded very quickly to Trump’s claim to credit when it comes to bringing the Ford Motor Company back to the United States. Claiming he was a major player in bringing the Mexico based factory back to America, when in fact Ford confirmed its decision years before Trump’s announcement for President.
“Our president wants to take in 250,000 from Syria … Think of it, 250,000 people. And we all have heart, and we all want people taken care of and all of that, but with the problems our country has, to take in 250,000 people — some of whom are going to have problems, big problems — is just insane.” Another wonderful fishing tale told by Trump as he tries to leverage the Syrian crisis and the current political tension regarding terrorists. The fact is that President Obama has agreed to bring in 10,000 refugees over the course of a year with the potential to slightly increase that number depending on circumstance. A far cry from 250,000.
One thing that Trump loves to talk about is himself, and he’s not above lying about his success to help promote his cause. One of the more recent lies revolved around his Trump Airline fumble. Trump claims, “ The airline, by the way, I sold the airline, you know, he said ‘Trump Airline,’ well I sold the airline, and I actually made a great deal, complicated, and in really terrible times, the economy was horrible, and I made a phenomenal deal.” Research tells a different story, and ultimately the business was closed down and repossessed.
Not including the infamous wall, Trump continues to weaken his Hispanic support by claiming,
“The Mexican government, they send the bad ones over.” Referencing his stance on America’s immigration struggle with Mexico, there is no evidence that the Mexican government supports, encourages, or assists criminals or “bad ones” from crossing the border and leaving their country.
Liar of the Year Award
These are only a select few of the lies told by Donald Trump over the recent years and months, and he has been so liberal with his lips that many reputable newspapers have stopped “fact-checking” his content. To solidify his reputation as a top liar aficionado, Politifact has awarded him the prestigious “Liar of the Year Award”.
