Born and raised in Harlem, NY, Teyana Taylor is an American recording artist and actress. But recently she’s blown up in the media due to her debut in Kanye West’s video, “Fade.” Taylor is only 25 years old, but she’s now got heavy exposure due to the recent publicity. However, this isn’t Teyana’s first rodeo; in fact, she signed her first record deal back in 2007 with Pharrell Williams’ Star Trak Entertainment and appeared on MTV’s “My Super Sweet 16” in 2007.
Since then, Teyana has continued to make headlines, offering inspiration to those who face bullying and self-doubt, showing how to rock it as the new “It” girl.
The Recent Stardom
Hot off the presses of the MTV’s VMAs and gracing the New York Fashion Week runway, Taylor tells Vogue magazine that you can be both a mom and superwoman. “You can be superwoman. You can have it all, that balance in your relationship, your family, and your career,” Taylor said. “It’s the opposite of the cliché that says kids will slow you or your career down.”
Teyana had just had her baby girl eight months before shooting the “Fade” video, which showcased her perfect midriff, beautiful curves, and sex appeal.
Anticipating the secretive release of the video on the VMA’s, Teyana shared with Vogue the moments before the reveal, stating, “Oh my god, it’s tonight! Do I look good? Do I look great? Is he going to change his mind and not premiere it?”
With modern technology, bullying is not limited to schoolyards. Nowadays, the majority of bullying is online: cyber-bullying. Taylor recently found out that age does not limit one’s susceptibility to bullying either, referring to her past Twitter feud with Rihanna. Teyana went on the offensive after Rihanna released a parody of her male stylists resembling Taylor singing a song. She responded on Twitter with “petty is petty, and shade is shade, bitch knew what the f–k she was doing.” Later confirming that she deleted the response, her stance on Rihanna as a bully has not changed.
Speaking with the Huffington Post, Teyana stated, “I think she’s a cyberbully. I believe she has dope music… She’s a beautiful girl. But that don’t mean that you can just bully anybody. It doesn’t work like that.”
Cyberbullying is not the only challenge that Teyana has overcome. Let’s face it, she just had a baby and debuted in one of the toughest industries on the planet and killed it with her body.
Fader caught up with Teyana to find out how having a child empowered her, asking: “There are so many images that tell women how our bodies can, or have to, be. This video has had an overwhelmingly positive response from many women, some of whom seem genuinely motivated to get serious about looking after their bodies. What do you think brought out that response?”
Teyana responded elegantly but with great depth, stating, “I feel like it would have gotten a different response if I didn’t have a child. That what’s inspiring. It’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, she pulled this off, and she has a child.’ It made mothers feel like, ‘anything is possible.’ ”
The Future of Teyana
So what does this new “It” girl plan to do with her bright future? She’s still dead set on her acting career, hoping to land various roles on the small screen. She also has high hopes for her new singing career after signing on to Kanye’s GOOD Music record label. Truly, the sky is the limit for this talented artist, and everyone–including moms–are excited to see just what she does next.
