Emmett Till’s Accuser Admits to Fabricating Story
In 2007, Timothy Tyson approached Bryant while he was working on his upcoming book The Blood of Emmett Till. During an interview with Tyson, she described Roy as a “domineering and brutal man,” and revealed that the incident was largely fabricated. Public reaction to this confession has been mixed. Dahleen Glanton’s Chicago Tribune response was unforgiving: “Carolyn Bryant Donham doesn’t deserve any accolades for finally telling the truth. She was a coward then and she’s a coward now.” However, some view the confession as a positive step. “I think until you break the silence, there is still that implied consent to the false narrative set forth in 1955,” said Patrick Weems, Project Coordinator at the Emmett Till Interpretive Center.
Wheeler Parker, a cousin of Till’s, expressed relief. “I was hoping that one day she would admit it, so it matters to me that she did, and it gives me some satisfaction.”
