No Collusion? Mueller Report Fails to impress.
The long-awaited report from the Office of Special Counsel was delivered without a hard finding of collusion between President Donald Trump and Russian officials. Disappointed Members of Congress, mostly Democrats, have already seen a deadline for the Attorney General to make the full report public come and go, and are now ready to take matters to a higher level. Notwithstanding this situation, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, perhaps the strongest leader of the Democratic Party, does not seem to be too interested.
A couple of weeks before the Special Counsel was delivered to the Justice Department, Speaker Pelosi stated that she was “not for impeachment” because she did not want to further divide the country with political machinations. Even though she has made clear what she thinks of President Trump, she has not been supportive of impeachment, and has mostly stayed silent in the wake of the report being delivered.
Pelosi’s reluctance to support articles of impeachment may seem somewhat puzzling given the two-year Mueller investigation hoopla and whispers of presidential treachery, but this is exactly what constituents should expect. The disappointment many Democratic voters felt (and still probably feel) when Attorney General William Barr summarized the report with an emphasis on “no collusion” is not an issue the House Speaker will publicly address. Remember, Pelosi was mostly silent during the impeachment proceedings of former President Bill Clinton, and she actually blocked impeachment against former President George W. Bush, also known as Bush 43.
Based on the Speaker’s history of being generally opposed or staying silent on impeachment proceedings, Democrats should not be surprised to learn that she does not intend to pursue ousting Trump; she already said “he’s not worth it”. At the same time, it should be noted that the President has largely spared her from his prolific Twitter attacks. One might wonder why? Perhaps Trump knows that Pelosi is a master politician whose feathers should not/cannot be ruffled in any manner. However, it would be safer to assume that she is simply waiting to see how her party handles the release of the Special Counsel report.
Although the Attorney General’s summary of the Special Counsel report has been a major letdown for many people, pundits and pontificators who wished to see a Nixonian exit by Trump, Pelosi has remained stone faced on the matter. She must be keenly aware of the multiple investigations Trump still faces, and probably is biding her time to see how they develop. Right Nancy? In other words, collusion may not be the worst Trump has to worry about, and impeachment could be overkill and unnecessary at this time.
