The feud between Nicky Minaj and Remy Ma recently hit a boiling point after Nicki threw shade at Remy Ma on Gucci Mane’s “Make Love” and Jason Derulo’s “Swalla,” Remy Ma responded with “Shether,” a scathing diss track. The track was released on February 25th and doesn’t hold back, tearing Nicki Minaj apart with a number of personal attacks. The two seem to be duking it out for the title of Queen of Rap, a title Nicki Minaj received from none other than Queen Bey in 2015. Nicki Minaj threw the first punch in 2007 with “Dirty Money.” Although the line in question wasn’t verified to be about Remy Ma, the rumor mill began in earnest and Minaj did nothing to quiet those rumors. Remy Ma confronted Minaj about it at a release party.
In 2008, Remy Ma went to prison on charges of assault and weapons possession. While Remy Ma was behind bars, Nicki Minaj saw her career take off. Remy Ma gave an interview while in prison that mentioned the issue, though she seemed to take it all in stride. Upon her release, signs even pointed to the feud being over, especially after she tweeted congratulations to Nicki Minaj for winning Best Female Hip-Hop Artist Award at the 2016 BET Awards. The peace was short-lived, however; as Remy Ma began to restart her rap career, she took a number of shots at Nicki Minaj.
Things were quiet on the Nicki Minaj/Remy Ma battleground for a while, but then Nicki Minaj started it up again. The latest attacks from Minaj focuses on how successful she has been while pointing out how Remy Ma’s album hasn’t sold well. In addition to hitting Remy Ma musically, she’s also been taunting Remy Ma on social media. With “Shether,” Remy Ma let loose with vicious attacks about Minaj’s body, career, family, and relationships. A second diss track is reportedly coming in March.
There are no signs that this feud is going away anytime soon and it seems to be getting increasingly intense. The public feud certainly helps to fuel publicity—something good for both rappers. Nicki Minaj has yet to respond to “Shether,” but it’s surely only a matter of time. Lil’ Kim jumped in and expressed her support for Remy Ma, not surprising given her own beef with Nicki Minaj. Likewise, Azealia Banks went on a tweet tirade about Nicki Minaj and the feud.
