Last week, Nicki Minaj offered via Twitter to pay tuition and student loans for some of her fans. This week, she’s restated her promise to do a repeat batch of giving soon while also announcing a charity devoted to her mission. In a recent post on Instagram, Minaj shared a screenshot of some of the recent payments that had been made to fans. A fan named Stradrianne had a loan totaling $5,877.17 paid off and Jacob had $269.25 spent on textbooks. One fan named Herman reportedly started crying at learning his tuition had been paid. Along with this update on last week’s generosity, Minaj recommitted to her plan to do another “impromptu payment spree in a month or two.”
Even more exciting, she teased that she would be starting an “official charity” soon to continue this mission of helping fans cover tuition fees and student loan costs. She didn’t give an exact timeline for when the charity would launch but said that it would be “VERY SOON.” Fans will be able to “officially sign up” before too long, Minaj wrote. It’s unknown at this point how the charity will work. It’s unlikely that Minaj and her charity will be able to help everyone. After all, 44 million borrowers in the US owe around $1.3 trillion in student loan debt. The average student in 2016 carries a debt of $37,172. Student loan debt has far surpassed debt from credit cards and auto loans in America. Even if Minaj can’t help everyone, her efforts will make all the difference in the world for those lucky enough to be chosen.
Minaj is not new to philanthropy, having previously given money and used her platform to give voice to certain causes. She’s supported the Red Cross and the Get Schooled Foundation, helped raise breast cancer awareness, and raised money for Project Angel Food through the auctioning of a custom-made Nicki Minaj Barbie doll. Her recent burst of giving—directly to the people in need— was unique, not just for her but for any celebrity. Starting her own charity is also breaking new ground for Minaj. As she saw on Twitter last week, Minaj’s Instagram post saw an outpouring of love and gratitude from fans. Instagram user ricstahz wrote “GENEROUS QUEEN!!!!!!!” We couldn’t agree more.
When the charity does launch, we hope those of you with student loan debt or tuition to pay will “Check It Out”—it’s sure to “Blow Ya Mind.”
