Members of the National Guard were deployed to the US Capitol ahead of the Congressional vote on impeaching President Trump for a second time.
The soldiers were observed standing inside the building with their weapons, whilst some of them lay casually on blankets on the floor. Defense department officials announced that the troops, who are being rushed into Washington to secure the Capitol for Inauguration Day, will be armed and ready to defend the nation’s sacred spaces.
Up to 15,000 troops from all over the country are now stationed in Washington DC. Defense Department officials had been debating whether to deploy them with arms. Secretary of the Army Ryan McCarthy detailed that the soldiers placed directly around the Capitol building will carry weapons. His announcement came after Speaker Pelosi demanded more stringent safety measures from the Pentagon after the siege at the Capitol on January 6th.
The Pentagon has legitimate fears for the safety of Joe Biden and VP-elect Kamala Harris, elected officials and the general public during the President-elect’s inauguration next week. Up to sixteen groups of hard-line supporters of Donald Trump, possibly armed, have registered to protest in the nation’s capital.
