‘Becoming’ is a word full of possibility and hope; it’s a word about change and transformation, filled with intention and creative energy. It is this word that Michelle Obama has chosen for the title of her forthcoming memoir. And as we continue to get new details about the book, we are becoming more and more excited. Becoming will be published on November 13th.
Penguin Random House obtained the rights to both Michelle and Barack Obama’s memoirs last year and anticipation for the books has been building ever since. Michelle’s book will tell her story, from her girlhood in the South Side of Chicago to her early days of balancing a career and motherhood, through her eight years in the White House. She says the book is about “how a little girl from the South Side of Chicago found her voice and developed the strength to use it to empower others.” She calls the book “deeply personal” and Penguin describes it as “unusually intimate.”
Although the dates and locations haven’t yet been set, Michelle will embark on an international book tour upon the memoir’s release. There is no doubt that she will be met with enthusiastic crowds at every stop. As one of the most popular and beloved women to ever hold the role of FLOTUS, she is seen the world over as an inspiring figure.
Since leaving office, the Obamas have been busy. They started the Obama Foundation and have worked tirelessly “to inspire and empower people to change their world.” They’ve also just settled into civilian life as a normal family, living in DC while Sasha finishes school, and doing a bit of traveling. Michelle remains a fashion icon and people continue paying attention to what the former FLOTUS is wearing. Most recently, the Obamas were in the news when their official portraits were revealed. Michelle’s portrait was painted by Amy Sherald, a Baltimore-based artist.
One thing is for sure: Becoming will undoubtedly be a bestseller. Memoirs from First Ladies traditionally sell very well and Michelle isn’t your average First Lady. The book deal with Penguin was record-breaking, at a reported $65 million, but the Obamas plan to donate a significant portion of the profits to charity, including the Obama Foundation. Is it November 13th yet?
