Usually referred to as just the Met Gala, The Costume Institute Gala at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art is a major fashion event. First held in 1948, the gala is both an opportunity to raise money for the Met’s Costume Institute and to celebrate the grand opening of its latest exhibition. And for the worldwide audience, the Met Gala is mostly about enjoying the spectacular and extravagant dress of famous attendees. This year’s theme was Camp: Notes On Fashion. The gala is chaired by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who each year enlists public figures to serve as her co-chairs. Past hosts have included Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, and Rihanna. The Met Gala 2019 was co-chaired by Lady Gaga, Alessandro Michele, Harry Styles and Serena Williams. The camp theme brought out some particularly fantastic looks from some of our favorite celebrities.
Co-chair Serena Williams attended the gala in a yellow floral Atelier Versace gown. She paired the glam with a pair of matching Nike sneakers, in a nod to both her sporty side and a celebration of the camp theme.
Coming off the high of last week’s BBMAs wins, Cardi B attended her second Met Gala in an appropriately fabulous ensemble. She wore a huge red Thom Browne gown, adorned with jewels and feathers. Cardi told Vogue on the red carpet that the ruby nipples on the breastplate cost $250k each. “If I lose one of these, I’m gonna have to sell one of my Birkin bags,” Cardi joked.
Lady Gaga brought her usual theatrical wow factor, with four different costume changes on the red carpet. This included a pink gown with a 25-foot train, a classic black gown, a pink column gown, and a crystal bra and panties with fishnet tights and platform boots. Her look was accompanied by tuxedoed male dancers holding up black umbrellas. The most notable aspect of her look was perhaps the extra long gold fake lashes she sported. The fabulous falsies were created by Gaga’s longtime makeup artist Sarah Tanno who said,”Researching Susan Sontag’s ‘Notes on Camp,’ the love of ‘things-being-what-they-are-not’ really resonated with me, so I wanted her lashes to be extremely exaggerated.” Mission accomplished.
A few stars known for making a splash at the Met Gala were absent for the 2019 event. This includes past co-chairs Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, and Rihanna.
