An explosive new Vanity Fair report about the Donald and Melania Trump marriage has also provided new insight into the relationship between Melania and Ivanka Trump. President Trump’s relationships with both women, his wife and his daughter, have always been closely scrutinized. Both relationships are certainly unlike any we’ve seen with any previous First Family. As First Lady Melania has yet to move into the White House and First Daughter Ivanka has taken over many of the traditional First Lady duties, it appears the relationship between the women may be a tense one.
During the presidential campaign, Melania barely participated, preferring instead to stay home with son Barron. The Vanity Fair profile quotes sources saying that Melania didn’t want her husband to run at all and that she was “terrified he might win.” Ivanka, on the other hand, was active on the campaign trail and has been an active participant in her father’s administration from day one. In addition to being a top advisor for her father and having her own office in the West Wing, she has also been taking on a number of responsibilities typically carried out by the First Lady; from choosing White House decorations to hosting dinner parties, Ivanka has seemed very comfortable in the role. She has also taken on more official duties in the administration, like her recent visit to the Holocaust memorial in Germany on behalf of her father.
During the campaign, Ivanka spoke of Melania with high praise. In an interview with People, Ivanka called Melania “an unbelievable mother” and a smart, “very warm” woman. Despite this, a number of unnamed sources told Vanity Fair that there is “frostiness” between these two women. Many believe Melania to be jealous of Ivanka and the amount of power she wields. Other sources close to the women contradicted this, saying the relationship is “fine” and “close.”
Melania has been seen in D.C. in an official capacity more frequently of late, perhaps in reaction to the news about her absence and tensions within the first family. She will reportedly be moving into the White House in June. Whether Ivanka’s role and presence will lessen at that point remains to be seen. It’s certain that with more public appearances together likely, all eyes will be on these supposed ice queens to see if the situation is truly as frosty as it is has been made out to be.
