Former Spice Girl Mel B., real name Melanie Brown, has recently filed for divorce in a Los Angeles Superior Court. Mel B. and her husband, producer Stephen Belafonte, have been married for ten years. The reason for the divorce was listed as irreconcilable differences. Scary Spice has previously been married to Jimmy Gulzar and has dated Eddie Murphy, and has a child with each. Mel is more recently known as a host on the hit American TV show America’s Got Talent, where she at turns lambastes and praises the performers in her charming British accent. Mel is also still a hot commodity in Britan, where she co-hosts The X-Factor.
Stephen Belafonte is a Hollywood film producer whose credits include Thank You For Smoking and Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans with Nicolas Cage. They were married in Las Vegas in 2004 after a brief romance. Friends and family have anonymously praised Mel in the press for leaving what they call the “scary” Stephen. They say he is “controlling” and that he has become physically abusive on occasion. In fact, she has previously missed the taping of an X-Factor live results show due to a hospital visit. Fans also accused Stephen of abuse after Mel appeared on an X-Factor show with bruises and scratches on her neck and arms.
While the date of separation is listed on the court document as late December, Mel B. has posted about Belafonte on her various social media accounts since then. As recently as February 6 she wrote, “You loved me before I even [knew] how to really love myself. You are my world, honey and let’s not forget you are a bit of a dickhead too xxxx.” Let’s hope that means it’s an amicable split for the two high-profile stars.
The two have one child together, five-year-old Madison. The court documents state that spousal support for Stephen shall be terminated, and since the two have a prenuptial agreement Stephen is likely to lose out on all but a small portion of the Spice Girl’s fortune.
