Malia Obama was spotted enjoying a night on the town this past week with a very handsome mystery man, causing a flurry of speculation. It didn’t take long for the mystery to be solved, as the man has been identified as 23-year-old Stanford grad Rob Franklin. The official line is that the pair are just friends, but there’s no denying they would make a great looking couple. After leaving the White House, the former First Daughter has been living in NYC for her Weinstein Company internship, before starting at Harvard next fall. Malia remains under the microscope and it was paparazzi that spotted Malia and her stylish potential suitor. The pair were seen walking around Soho together on March 29th. People were quick to comment on the mystery guy’s height, good looks, and serious style.
Now that Franklin’s name is out there, his details are being shared and discussed. According to Hollywood Life, Rob was active in theatre in college, he currently works as an audience development manager at Artsy.net, and he speaks four languages. This is the only documented time the two have been seen spending time together, but they reportedly met at a Men’s Fashion Week event. According to Rob’s friends, they’ve been hanging out quite a bit, but the relationship is just platonic.
President Obama did previously share that his daughters did date while they were at the White House, despite the intimidation of the Secret Service. No names of past boyfriends have been released. It’s safe to say that any boy Malia does date will get as much or more attention as maybe-just-a-friend Rob is getting right now. It’s also safe to say that it would be pretty intimidating to meet your girlfriend’s father when that father is Barack Obama, even if he seems to have a pretty relaxed attitude about his daughters and dating.
As of right now, all we know is that Malia has a new artsy friend in NYC. Time will tell if there’s something more to the relationship. Malia, though, has plenty of time. After all, she’s an 18-year-old just exploring what it’s like to live in a new city, on her own for the first time, and having as close to a “normal” existence as is possible for a former First Daughter. The right “mystery guy” will come along eventually, as Malia is certainly a catch.
