Kanye West launched his Yeezy Season 5 collection at Pier 59 Wednesday afternoon during hectic and exciting New York Fashion Week. The iconic rap star and fashion designer decided to switch things up this time around, with a quieter and less ostentatious runway spectacle that lasted about 13 minutes. All eyes were focused on Kim Kardashian West, as she made her way to the show wearing deep purple from head to toe. The paps took photos of her Yeezy ensemble, which included a sheer sleeveless turtleneck bodysuit, track pants and a puffer jacket with lace-up, pointed toe boots. Kim K West wore her hair black, sleek and long, a la vintage Cher.
The Yeezy Season 5 collection opened to a dark Pier 59 Studios. According to Complex, the show began with a voice-over and followed with videos of female and male models being projected over a black screen in the runway center. In the front row, famous faces like Vogue magazine’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour held court with Kim K West. Other celebrity guests included Kylie Jenner and boyfriend Tyga, La La Anthony, Hailey Baldwin, Pusha T, Teyana Taylor and ASAP Bari. Yeezy Season 5 debuted new features to the collection, like some brighter-colored pieces, denim in jackets and high-waist jeans, and a new running sneaker that offered a bit more bulk and structure than the signature Yeezy Boost 350s. Kanye West also introduced new athleisure pieces, jackets reading “Calabasas,” lots of thigh-high boots in maroon and others in taupe. Camouflage prints were also major on the Yeezy Fall 2017 Ready-To-Wear runway. There were hoodies, track jackets, sweat pants and embroidered jackets on display.
The designer cast 19-year-old Somali-American teenager Halima Aden to walk in his new collection. This became Halima’s fashion week debut as a new model; she was recently signed to agency IMG. Aden wore a hijab on the runway for Yeezy Season 5. In one of the more dramatic ensembles, she walked out in a floor-length fur coat. Kanye West did not debut new music during the brief runway collection and did not emerge to take the final bow at the end of the show. Instead, Kim K West signaled the end of her husband’s collection by standing up at its conclusion.
There’s been some heavy buzz about the hot collection, and it appears to have been very well-received.The 13-minute show at Pier 59 was a quiet low-key event, as many had expected. Kanye West reportedly banned all media people with credentials just moments before the presentation was set to begin at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
