Just three months after giving birth to her first child, Janet Jackson is reportedly splitting from her husband. The former couple welcomed son Eissa in January. Jackson and husband Wissam Al Mana have been married since 2012. It’s her third marriage, having previously been married to James DeBarge and René Elizondo Jr. Al Mana is a billionaire Qatari businessman. The couple was extremely private and mostly kept to themselves, though they did share with the media the somewhat surprising news of Jackson’s pregnancy at age 50 this year. The family has been living in London. When Eissa was born, Al Mana reportedly “insisted the family live under strict Muslim custom, which included prohibiting the new mom from being seen in public while nursing the baby.”
Page Six reports that sources have given mixed explanations for the split. Some are claiming it was an amicable break, but others suggest that Jackson left because “Al Mana had gotten too controlling during her pregnancy.” Al Mana reportedly dictated what Jackson could and couldn’t wear and even told her how to perform in her concerts and in her videos. Jackson reportedly reached a breaking point with her husband’s reclusive nature as well. Al Mana’s supposed dismissal of Jackson’s concerns about her mother Katherine’s elder abuse situation was also reportedly a factor. The Control singer decided to take control of her own life after years of apparently being controlled.
It’s not yet known for sure where Jackson will live and raise her son or if the couple will smoothly co-parent Eissa together. It’s also unknown at this point if divorce papers have been filed or if Jackson will pursue spousal or child support. TMZ reports that the separation came conveniently at the five-year mark, likely leading to a better financial resolution for Jackson. It’s unknown if Jackson and Al Mana had a prenup, but Jackson did have one with her second husband. It also seems unlikely that a successful businessman like Al Mana would enter into a marriage without one. Splitting right at the five-year mark, though, suggests that Jackson may have wanted to leave sooner but decided to wait until a point that would lead to more money in a divorce. The singer is reportedly worth around $175 million, but Al Mana is worth $1 billion. Regardless, young Eissa will be well taken care of.
