You might call it Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak, but it’s not. A “magical” shield that can make objects ‘vanish’ behind an innovative light-bending material has been created for the military. The developers, HyperStealth Biotechnology Corp, claim its new application is based on Quantum Stealth Technology – also known as the “Invisibility Cloak.” Yes. Potter is now real life science.
The technology works by bending light waves around selected objects, removing visuals and even shadows of objects. The ‘invisibility cloak’ can even bend light in near infrared, near ultraviolet and short-wave infrared, as the video shows. It is able to block the Therman Spectrum, which is how it garnered its nickname of the ‘Broadband Invisibility cloak’.
The camouflage technology conceals a target in the visible spectrum. However, it also appears quantifiably capable in the Ultraviolet, Infrared and Shortwave Infrared spectrums. In addition, it blocks the Thermal Spectrum, making it a true ”Broadband Invisibility Cloak”. ‘One piece of Quantum Stealth can work in any environment, in any season and at any time of the day or night, something no other camouflage is capable of.
The technology requires no power source and is as light and inexpensive as paper. It renders “invisible” large constructs like vehicles, ships, spacecrafts and buildings.
But the most mind bending quality of the “cloak” is its ability to completely camouflage the human form, so that the human eye cannot detects person behind the shield. It brings to mind all kinds of possibilities for practical future use in military and civilian operations, perhaps even crime? Science is not that far from magic, and as Harry Potter will agree, this would be a great way to fight off real-life Voldermorts and their nasty monsters!
HyperStealth Biotechnology Corp expects real life applications within a short period of time.
