Saint Patrick’s Day, a day filled with green beer, festivities, and love for the Irish. But did you know that Saint Patrick was a real-life hero? In fact, legend has it he battled armies of witches and druids, and banished all the snakes from Ireland—and none of that included green beer! Skip ahead to modern society and Saint Patrick’s Day is more about celebrating with your friends than driving evil from the lands—unless of course, you consider drinking green beer as your elixir of power. Speaking of potent elixirs, Conor McGregor, “our favorite Irish sportsman” is touting his pride for the Irish by calling out Floyd Mayweather in a title fight.
One of the biggest news items this Saint Patrick’s Day is the speculation that Mayweather might come out of retirement to face off with one of MMA’s biggest stars, McGregor himself. “A lot of things make this fight intriguing. Conor McGregor is huge. He’s in the prime of his career. Floyd is 40. Floyd has always had problems with southpaws; Conor is a southpaw, and Conor hits hard. When he hits people, they go. Floyd is not knocking him out. That’s for sure,” the UFC’s Dana White explained.
While the future of the fight is still in question, this year’s Saint Paddy’s Day has certainly been stepped up a notch with just the idea of our favorite Irishman squaring off against an opponent who some call the world’s best. Mayweather himself weighed in on the subject stating, “At the moment no papers have been signed, but I hope that the fight will take place in June.” McGregor touted his stance on the fight in his true Irish fashion stating, “I’m the boxing guy! Watch me take over boxing. Trust me on that. No one in this boxing game knows what’s coming. Trust me on that! When I step in there, I’ll shock the whole [expletive] world. Trust me on that.”
