Bronx Brains and Beauty: AOC, Cardi B and JLo are regular news-makers known for their catchy nicknames. They have each overcome many obstacles to get where they are yet they all remain true to their Bronx roots. All three are strong and successful women with both brains and beauty. These ladies sometimes even reference one another and work together and we are definitely here for this powerful trio of Bronx bombshells.
Like Jennifer Lopez, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was born to a Puerto Rican family in the Bronx. Before becoming the U.S. Representative for New York’s 14th congressional district, she is famously known to have worked as a bartender. But AOC also worked at the nonprofit National Hispanic Institute and launched Brook Avenue Press, a publishing firm for books that portray the Bronx positively. Even before her incredible primary defeat of Joe Crowley and her new role as Fox News’ favorite punching bag, AOC was doing incredible things for her community.
AOC playfully referenced JLo when sharing a picture of her office plaque on Twitter. She has also used her fierce Twitter game to stand up for another Bronx girl, Cardi B. When conservative commentator Tomi Lahren got into a Twitter battle with Cardi B, AOC stood up for her girl and the borough they both call home, a place known for “perfecting the clapback game.”
Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, better known as Cardi B, got her start as a stripper, a path chosen as a way to escape poverty and abuse. When she transitioned to music, it didn’t take her long to grow a long list of accolades. This includes three number-one singles on the US Billboard Hot 100 and winning loads of awards. As they say, talent recognizes talent, and JLo chose to collaborate with Cardi B on Dinero, where Cardi raps about the Bronx.
Jennifer Lopez has been a public figure longer than Cardi and AOC and has seen great success as a singer, actress, dancer, and producer. Through it all, JLo has tried to just be “Jenny from the block.” JLo is producing the upcoming movie Hustlers about “a crew of savvy former strip club employees who band together to turn the tables on their Wall Street clients.” She will star along with Cardi B who will be making her feature film debut. The only thing that could make this collaboration better would be a cameo by AOC!
