Comedian Ben Stiller is back in the news, this time teaming up with Vine sensation Jérôme Jarre to spread awareness about the famine in Somalia and to help bring aid to the devastated region. Jarre and Stiller have teamed up with American Refugee Committee (ARC), a non-governmental organization, to help raise money and deliver much-needed supplies to Somalia.
Posting a GoFund Me page, Jérôme states, “For the first flight, we will buy the food in Istanbul, as a thank you to our Turkish friends that supports [sic] the movement. Later on, we are hoping to learn how to buy food directly from local businesses in Somalia. We want to help the Somalian economy. “For water, we’ve learned from multiple NGOs on the ground that the most sustainable thing to do is get water trucks to be delivered. Each water truck is about $250 and about 2000 liters. Those 2000 litters will support approximately 100 families of 6 people.” Stiller, a long-time advocate for human rights, posted his plea on YouTube, asking all to help the estimated six million people suffering from famine in Somalia and the surrounding areas, and telling the Internet, “My friend Jérôme Jarre told me of a crazy idea, he thinks we can all help, by getting an airplane filled with food and water to Somalia, right now.”
In just four days the team has already surpassed their $2 million goal, with over 74K people donating money to win over Turkish Airlines, purchase the food and water supplies needed, and pay for the shipment. The latest update on Jarre’s GoFund Me page states that the first plane will be heading to the region within days! A crazy idea supported by many, means that millions of people will have access to water and food very soon in an area ravished by famine and suffering.
