Is there any couple who embodies #RelationshipGoals more than Barack and Michelle Obama? This week, the former President and First Lady celebrated 25 years of wedded bliss. While Michelle was taking part in the Pennsylvania Conference for Women along with Shonda Rhimes, Barack popped in on a surprise video. As Michelle blushed and the ladies in the crowd cheered, Barack gushed about Michelle and wished her a happy anniversary.
How did Michelle respond to the adorable gesture? She quipped that she “better get home!” She also shared a wedding picture on both Instagram and Twitter with a caption of “A quarter of a century later, you’re still my best friend & the most extraordinary man I know.” The Obamas first met in Chicago in 1989. It took some persistence before Michelle agreed to give Barack a chance, but the rest was history. In fact, the beginning of their story has even been dramatized in a movie. Three years after that first date, the future POTUS and FLOTUS were married. Through it all – children, careers, books, trips around the world, a presidency – their love has remained strong. How do we know? It’s clear in the way they look at each other, the way they talk about and to each other, the way they are always affectionate with each other, and the way they make each other laugh. They respect one another deeply. Simply put, Barack and Michelle Obama model everything that a relationship can and should be.
There are so many reasons to miss the days when the Obamas were in the White House, and seeing a regular spotlight of a strong, healthy, happy marriage is definitely one of those reasons. The Obamas remain committed to public service with their foundation and other efforts, and the majority of Americans are still eager to stay connected to this power couple. This hasn’t been a very good week for Americans. By sharing some of their 25th-anniversary happiness with all of us, the Obamas reminded us all of the power of love and the importance of all of the foundational qualities that make up strong relationships and strong countries.
For those who are single and looking for love, Barack and Michelle Obama’s relationship is a good goal to shoot for. As HuffPost jokes, “Find somebody who looks at you the way Barack looks at Michelle.”
Here’s to 25 more years and then some for the Obamas!
