African clubs across the globe have been spinning Ayo Jay’s “Your Number” since it came on the scene. Nigerian singer and performer Ayo Jay was born Ayoola Ogundeyi Jr. on August 9, 1989, in London, England. He is also known in some circles as Boy Wonder and was raised in Lagos, Nigeria. He discovered his singing ability at an early age. Following his graduation from high school in Nigeria in 2007, he relocated to the United States. There he studied finance and investments at Baruch College in New York City, New York.
While Jay had been singing since he was young, he did not decide to pursue a career in music until after he attended college. Although his signature sound has gone on to become apart of the growing genre of Afropop, his inspiration has come from various sources including West African pop, Western R&B, and rap. His musical heroes are Akon, Usher, and 2face Idibia. He officially began his career in music in 2013 when he signed his first record deal with One Nation Records. He released his debut track, a single titled “Your Number”, on June 21, 2013. The next year he put out the follow-up single,”Available”.
Jay released a remix of “Your Number” on July 16, 2015. It featured New Jersey-born rapper and singer Fetty Wap. He was signed to an international deal with RCA earlier this year. He released “Your Number” again on their label on November 11, 2016. The single has grown to become wildly successful, gettting mainstream radio play not only in Africa, but across the United States and Europe including the music video for “Your Number” which was shot in Atlanta, Georgia. To date, he has released 11 singles. The latest of which is the single “Fowosere.”
