Donald Trump spent years trying to prove that Barack Obama was not fit, nor qualified to be President of the United States. From his incessant desire to see Barack’s official birth certificate, to his blatant disrespect throughout his campaign trail, Trump finally met Barack Obama for the first time and it was awkward.
The Initial Meeting
While there was a handshake, there was not immediate eye contact. The first meeting of Barack Obama and Donald Trump was distant, cold, and unconventional. If you look at prior meetings between Presidents and Elects, you will see a warm tone, smiles, and a welcoming atmosphere. Both Donald and Obama appeared to have a grimacing face when they first shook hands. Then there’s the traditional photo of both men standing outside the White House, also not present in the welcoming of the President-Elect. Not to mention the two First Ladies having their own awkward exchange.
While both men paid their respects, and the initial meet and greet did go on for an hour and half, many were anticipating how the two would emerge and what words would be shared after the conversation. To the surprise of many, Trump backpeddled on his previous harsh stance against Obama, calling the introduction a “great honor.” He went on to state, “I very much look forward to dealing with the President in the future, including counsel.” He added, “I look forward to being with you many, many more times.”
In summary, the two met cordially for roughly 90 minutes, but the body language, personal connection, and awkward moments continue to be analyzed as the two most powerful men in American work together to hand off the baton and trade places.
