Born on Leap Day in 1996 in Lagos, Nigeria, and naturally gifted as an entertainer, Korede Bello has been performing since he was seven years of age, initially under the stage name “African Prince.” Bello’s professional music career began when he was in middle school, where he recorded the single Forever. Forever’s success brought Bello into contact with Don Jazzy and eventually allowed him to sign with Mavin Records in early 2014. The young artist has also developed a signature hairstyle and wink that have helped to draw ecstatic adulation from his fans, who are popularly known as “Bellovers.”
Anyone who listens to Bello’s performances, either as a vocalist or a as guitarist, can tell that his musical focus is set on the pop genre. Despite this focus on pop songs, Godwin, one of his top songs, is almost as much a pop song as it is a gospel song. Godwin was a single released in 2015 that has earned Bello awards and nominations from several music organizations: 2015 won him “Best Single of the Year” from the GIAMAs; 2016 won him “Best Pop Single” from the 2015 Headies, “Best Contemporary Afro Video” from the NMVAs and nominations for Godwin from the NEA’s “Hottest Single of the Year,” and the 2015 Headies’ “Song of the Year.” In addition to Godwin, Forever and Romantic, Kello’s discography includes 10 other singles.
Beyond the creation of Godwin, Bello received a nomination for “Best Collaboration” from the 2016 NEAs for Romantic, a joint production between himself and Tiwa Savage. When looking at artists who were nominated or who won, Bello won “Most Promising Music Act To Watch” from the 2014 Nigeria Teen Choice Awards, a nomination for “Best New Act” from the 2015 NEAs, a nomination for “Next Rated” from the 2015 Headies and won “Pop Artiste of the Year” from the 2016 CPEAs.
Beyond his musical aspirations and kudos, Bello possesses a national diploma in Mass Communications from the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), and maintains an associate-level membership within the Institute of Information Management. Although he is still in the early phase of his career and still has many years ahead of him, Bello has already participated in some charity work, including the Cancer Awareness Project.
