Nigerian musicians and identical twins Peter and Paul Okoye formed their R&B duo P-Square in the early 2000s. After winning a few competitions and building a fanbase, they signed to a record label in 2011. They put out a number of hit records together before dramatically disbanding in 2016, after some intense disagreements. For Peter, leaving the duo with his twin gave him the opportunity to step forward into a solo career.
Shortly after the duo broke up, Peter signed a distribution deal with California-based label Empire. The label has worked with artists like Kendrick Lamar, Remy Ma, and Migos. As a solo artist, Peter now goes by the name Mr. P. He recently released a new single called “Cool it Down.” Peter, always well known for his great dance moves, will be under the microscope as a solo singer. The single has garnered a lot of attention already. The music video has already had nearly two million views in the one month it has been online.
P-Square was a beloved group in Nigeria and many fans are upset about their disbanding. Some might be looking for the same vibe in Peter’s solo work. Joey Akan writes in Pulse that Mr. P lacks the “inflection and vocal twists” that P-Square was known for. Akan concludes that so far Peter doesn’t stand out enough on his own vocally. Despite some criticism, the majority of comments on the “Cool it Down” video are positive. Some commenters say the vibe of the song is reminiscent of the early P-Square sound.
Mr. P began a solo tour in the US in October but temporarily suspended it after a few weeks, pointing to the challenges of missing his wife and children in Nigeria. Brother Paul has also been releasing some solo songs, though he hasn’t been signed to a label like his brother. So far, Paul seems to be sticking to the style of P-Square in his solo releases whereas Peter is exploring a bit and trying to find a unique sound for himself. Will the brothers ever sing together again? Their fans certainly hope so. In a recent interview with Vibe magazine, Peter left the door to that possibility open. He said that they will sing together again when the respect they had lost returns.
