President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe recently lectured critics who think he has been in power for too long. He swore to maintain control of government until his death. The Zimbabwean leader has led the country since its Independence in 1980.
In January 2015, Mugabe became the AU chairperson in the midst of a lot of excitement. However, according to opposition groups and local analysts, his term was catastrophic.
The veteran leader stated in his one hour speech that he would be Zimbabwe’s leader until God summoned him. He slammed his critics’ view that he should relinquish power as undemocratic. He stated such demands were instigated from Europe.
President Mugabe, who took to the podium before Ban Ki-moon (UN Secretary-General) and Nkosazana Dlamini, AU Commission chairperson, was wildly applauded as he criticized President Barrack Obama. He alleged that Obama is simply “a voice created to talk in their language, not ours.” He went on to state that African Americans suffer reduced health and education opportunities.
Mugabe’s Rule is a Total Flop (according to critics)
In the meantime, Obert Gutu, MDC-T spokesperson stated Zimbabweans ought to be happy due to the end of Mugabe’s term as AU chair. According to Gutu, Mugabe’s term of office failed to generate any positive outcomes in Zimbabwe specifically and Africa as a whole. He gave an example of the volatile political areas in Africa like Somalia, Burundi, Libya and DRC which are still in chaos. Gutu added that Mugabe failed to take any significant and concrete action to solve the numerous political issues afflicting these African states that were troubled.
Gutu said that Mugabe spent most 2015 traveling while the political hotbeds in Africa went on burning. Gutu said Mugabe has not at any time been recognized as a sharp diplomat and problem solver; rather, as leader who talks a lot but does not take action.
He made trips from Zimbabwe 44 times, using up in excess of $60million from the national Treasury while the economy of Zimbabwe is still in the doldrums.
Willas Madzimure, the international relations secretary of PDP (People’s Democratic Party) said Mugabe literally “folded his arms as Zimbabwe and Africa went down the drain in the course of his term.” He depicted him as the worst AU chair experienced in Africa.
“Mugabe’s report card as the chair of AU indicates that Africa goes on being destroyed by terror attacks, coups, wars, illness, corruption, child labour and oppression of African women, while he just remains aloof,” Madzimure stated. He claimed Mugabe did not offer the continent political leadership, leaving many African issues unsolved, culminating in huge conflicts.
The continent faces increasing insecurity also, due to the origin of terror groups like Boko Haram, ISIL in Eastern, Western and Northern Africa, and Al Qaeda. This has compelled a lot of Africans to migrate to Europe leading to tragic deaths at sea.
Despite all these horrible events, the continental leader appears to be unmoved, perhaps realizing he has many times depended on similar tactics to prolong his rule each year after elections.
