In what many are calling the “October Surprise,” Clinton is fighting back and demanding accountability from the FBI. This all comes in the latest chapter of the Clinton email scandal. FBI Director James Comey acted to notify Congress of his recent findings in the email controversy. This time, the emails were not based on “deleted” content; instead they were found during an investigation into sexting emails belonging to the infamous Anthony Weiner.
However, Clinton–among others–was not happy with the recent email exposé and demanded that the FBI take action against the federal agent, agreeing with Justice Department staff who advised the FBI Chief his letter would be against departmental policy.
According to FBI protocol, it is against standard operating procedures to release comments on an investigation close to an election. Despite the warning, Comey moved forward, stating, “We don’t ordinarily tell Congress about ongoing investigations, but here I feel an obligation to do so given that I testified repeatedly in recent months that our investigation was completed.” Comey said, “I also think it would be misleading to the American people were we not to supplement the record.”
The Emails in Question
Anthony Weiner has destroyed not only his marriage, but now threatens to topple the Democratic Party only days before the election. The FBI released information regarding their findings of the former congressmen and a 15-year-old girl corresponding through illicit text messages.
James Comey released a letter to members of Congress informing them that Weiner’s new emails had been found and in fact were “pertinent to the investigation.”
Clinton Fires Back
The Clinton camp jumped on the release within seconds, demanding that the unprecedented release of investigation materials be released with “full and complete” facts around the newest edition of the investigation.
Presidential nominee Hillary Clinton also weighed in on the topic at a recent news conference: “Voting is underway, so the American people deserve to get the full and complete facts immediately.” She added that it was “imperative that the Bureau explain this issue in question, whatever it is, without any delay,” and that she was “confident” that the findings would not affect the earlier conclusions made in the case.
Trump Takes Full Advantage
As one of Trump’s main targets during the campaign, the release of new information on the investigation has only fueled the fire, with Trump taking to social media to quickly take full advantage of the situation.Trump, who was in New Hampshire when the news broke, made an announcement only minutes after the release of the information. According to those in attendance, the crowd roared and began to chant “lock her up” in support of their candidate.
Trump went on to applaud the FBI for having the “courage” to step forward and release the newest information. In addition, he said that he hoped the agency would correct their “horrible mistake” of not indicting Hillary Clinton for the ongoing controversy.
With only days before the election, Clinton has some serious damage control to cover before she loses the confidence of voters who recently leaned towards her camp. The polls show Clinton in the lead, but this latest smear on her reputation and integrity could prove to give Trump a last-minute boost in the polls, making the election closer than some expected as we round the curve and come to the end of this highly controversial, unprecedented, and historical election.
