Christabel Ouko, the widow of Dr. Robert Ouko, Kenya’s former Foreign Affairs Minister from 1979-1983 and 1998-1990, died on Monday in a road accident in Kisumu along the Awasi-Kericho highway. According to the local traffic police, her car veered off course at the Muhoroni junction killing her instantly. Coincidentally, it was the same area where her late husband Dr. Robert Ouko had an accident a few days prior to his assassination in February 1990.
Mrs. Ouko’s body was taken to Siloam Hospital Mortuary. Ouko’s sudden death means she has died without knowing who murdered her husband and whose charred body was found near a herd’s boy at Got Alila in Kisumu County on February 13th, 1990. In the last few decades, she has demanded justice and truth behind her husband’s death. Okuo took it upon herself to establish key institutions in her rural community with the aim of commemorating her husband’s legacy. Some of these institutions include libraries, schools, and dormitories named after Dr. Ouko.
At 76 years old, Mrs. Ouko was the mother of seven children including four girls and three boys; she leaves behind her beloved family and friends. Burial arrangements are ongoing.
