If you happen to browse the streets of Snapchat, then you must have heard or seen Bobrisky in all his fame and glory. Nigeria is known for its extreme humor and drama, and Bobrisky does not disappoint. Known worldwide as the “Nigerian male Barbie doll,” Bobrisky shot to fame for his makeup skills and most certainly, controversy and drama. But who is Bobrisky? And how has his controversial personality made him world famous?
Bobrisky’s real name is Okunneye Idris-Olanrewaju. A native of Ebute Metta, Lagos, he is the youngest child in a polygamous family. Idris is Bobrisky’s Muslim name although he reported that he does not practice the religion. As he was growing up, he was nicknamed Bob or Bobo which he later came to join with the word ‘risky,’ establishing himself as a brand: Bobrisky. His rise to fame started quite early while he was pursuing his bachelor’s degree in accounting at Lagos University, during which time he opened a boutique. In his interview with Daily Media, he reported that he used to teach choreography part-time while in school, which allowed him to get funds for setting up his business. He had a massive following even back then, due to his impeccable fashion sense. Bobrisky later opened a shop where he sold makeup.
Rise to fame
Bobrisky’s rise to fame is connected to his love for fashion and makeup, two things mostly associated with women. He wears makeup and feminine clothing without feeling remorseful about it, which has made him quite controversial and unique to many. In this way, he has been able to create more awareness about the existence of his brand. He, however, became an overnight sensation on social media after posting a video of himself dancing and people began to follow him in large numbers. However, this fame does not come without its challenges. Bobrisky has faced criticism for various reasons, ranging from questions surrounding his sexuality to issues with bleaching.
Due to his feminine style, Bobrisky has been viewed with a suspicious eye, especially in Africa where homosexuality is still considered taboo. Many of his followers find his lifestyle offensive, and some have even threatened him. He, however, maintains that he is straight and has a girlfriend who he has managed to keep away from the social eye. He only refers to her as “bae” and cannot disclose who she is.
Bobrisky also came under fire when he chose to lighten his complexion. Reportedly, he bought an expensive bleaching cream from Dubai and used it to brighten his skin, only to find that some areas of his body looked brighter than others. He went ahead and brightened his skin fully to ensure uniformity, and as the cream worked, he started selling it to his clients. Bobrisky became an object of both hate and desire to his fans because of the history associated with his sexuality, sense of style, and bleaching.
He has also been a victim of online attacks, from makeup artists who claim they have not been paid, to those who simply attack him for being who he is, such as Afia Schwarzenegger. He is central to a lot of drama, but that does not stop him. He most recently decided to commercialize his Snapchat by upgrading to a premium account where his users will have to pay 10,000 Naira to view his snaps. He believes those who love him will still follow him on his new account, claiming the old one had so many haters.
Hate and Support
Bobrisky is also known to be fierce, as he faces all of his “haters” with courage and does not stop doing what he does best. One Tribe caught up with him and discovered the depth of his personality. As he was looking for a make-up artist and photographer to help him, One Tribe finally had the chance to meet the person who, according to Google was one of the most searched West African personalities in West Africa between October and November 2016. They describe him as one who loves money, which can be substantiated by his posh lifestyle and the fact that he reminds others of his financial situation and ambitions. He keeps to himself and sometimes seems depressed because he cannot be accepted fully by his society. Despite his online vigor, Bobrisky still has a human aspect that makes him as vulnerable and needing of love like the rest of us. He gives loyalty and expects it back and does not use people for money as many believe. He has, however, garnered support from many parties including Kemi Omololu-Olunloyo. She notes that people like Bobrisky may be the key to fighting the discrimination that is still present in Africa. The question of the true nature of Bobrisky, is, however, left to readers to decide. One thing for certain though, is that he is here to stay.
