Getting recognized for your talent is a beautiful thing, and it’s only customary that one makes an acceptance speech on such occasions. That’s exactly what Mohammed Anas did during a televised speech while accepting the “Man of the Match” award. Mohammed, a Ghanaian soccer player for the Free State Stars, slipped up during his speech, thanking both his wife and his girlfriend at the same time: “Thank you for this, I appreciate my fans. My wife and my girlfriend… I mean my wife, sorry, I love you so much from my heart.”
The faux pas landed Anas in a heap of trouble with both women as he fumbled the ball trying to correct his statement. Quickly trying to backpedal, Anas “clarified” that his reference to a “girlfriend” was in fact meant for his daughter, saying, “My family knows that I call my daughter my girlfriend. That’s what I was talking about. I don’t have a girlfriend.” However, this correction only made things worse as fans questioned his family dynamic. Still trying to recover from the penalty, Anas told BBC, “I love her so much. She’s given me two beautiful children. She is fine. She knows what kind of man I am so I am not worried.” The couple who have been married for seven years have two children together and appear to have a stable relationship—something that may change shortly as time will tell if he was, in fact, referring to another woman in his elated acceptance speech.
The question remains, does Mohammed Anas have a side chick, or does he have an awkward relationship with his daughter? For now, Anas is sticking with the family card hoping that his blunder will pass and not interfere with his future as a soccer player.
